Description of the Trip

Sailing expedition from Tromsø across the Arctic seas (Norwegian, Barents, Greenland Seas) to Svalbard. The programme includes western Spitsbergen.

Where else but here to taste the proverbial bear meat? Here, it’s not only notoriously tough but also heavily frozen. Where if not in the Arctic to confront our weaknesses?

Ahead of us lies one of the most intriguing sailing routes, 450 Nm to the North across the open Barents Sea. Along the way, if Neptune allows, Bjørnøya – the infamous Bear Island. Those who come victorious from this test may, after 4-5 days, catch sight of a gleaming white land on the horizon and discover its beauty. Spitsbergen. Besides the adventure, we also have an opportunity to explore the western part of Svalbard, unique places that are a reward for previous hardships. And after digesting the bear meat, we hope to spot the king of this realm on the shore – the polar bear.

We start in Tromsø. If weather permits, we’ll sail straight towards Svalbard, and if conditions in the Arctic Ocean require waiting it out, we head towards the Lyngen Alps, the beautiful Kvænangen fjord, and our beloved Spildra. Under favourable conditions for our plans, we’ll have about 5-7 long days on Spitsbergen. It’s time during which we’ll try to visit the Polish Polar Station in Hornsund, explore the most interesting accessible places in Isfjorden, and touch the ice limit.

Day 1: Tromsø

Tromsø

Embarking and exploring Tromsø. This town sits high above the Arctic Circle and is known as the gateway to the Arctic, serving as the starting point for many polar expeditions. For us, it’s also a beginning of the route to Svalbard.

Day 2-11: Tromsø – (Kvænangen) - Bjørnøya – Sørkapp – Hornsund – Isfjorden– Longyearbyen

Tromsø – (Kvænangen) - Bjørnøya – Sørkapp – Hornsund – Isfjorden– Longyearbyen

The Arctic Ocean is a challenging sailing area. We need a “weather window” for a few days to reach Svalbard. If it’s not possible, we’ll start by heading towards the picturesque Kvænangen and the island of Spildra.

In favourable conditions, we set sail northward, embarking on a true sailing adventure, leaving behind hospitable Norwegian fjords. And though with each mile we draw closer to the North, the sun begins to linger. We find ourselves alone with the sea, leaving land astern.
If conditions permit, we will navigate towards Bear Island, the southernmost part of the Svalbard archipelago, inviting us to continue our journey. The western coast of Bear Island boasts spectacular rock formations and towering cliffs.

Setting off, we scan ahead for tall, snow-covered mountains, and when we spot them, we can be certain we are in the region of Sørkapp, a small island at the southern tip of Spitsbergen. Beautiful landscapes will accompany us from now on. After nearly another 100 nautical miles, or about 600 nautical miles from Tromsø, we arrive at Hornsund (an option achievable only under very favourable weather and ice conditions), where the Polish Polar Station is situated in a picturesque fjord. We request permission and pay a visit to this welcoming place.

After a rest, we continue our journey northward, exploring western Spitsbergen, and then enter Isfjorden, heading towards Longyearbyen. There awaits us our first real port, a shower, solid ground, and a visit to a local pub. A toast “to those on land,” for those at sea – as we can see, have survived again.
If time allows and weather permits, we sail to the ice edge in Isfjorden, searching for wildlife, including polar bears.

Day 12: Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen

This day marks the time for final strolls around Longyearbyen, farewells, and the journey back home.

In the event of unfavourable or stormy conditions along the Tromsø – Spitsbergen route and a few days of being unable to sail on the open sea, we will endeavor to sail towards Nordkapp, visiting places such as Spildra, Hasvik, and Havøysund. Such a situation may also lead to a shortened stay in the Svalbard region.

The above programme is only a framework. Its execution depends on the weather. The sequence of its stages may be altered and adjusted to prevailing conditions, and some parts of the programme may remain unrealized. After all, this is the Arctic. However, based on our experience, we can assure you that we will spend our time very intensively and make every effort to ensure that our participants see as many local attractions as possible.
