Description of the Trip

The most beautiful places in the Lofoten. Trollfjorden accessible only by sea. Mountains with the most spectacular views. Magic in every corner. Fishing opportunities. Chance to encounter orcas.

Ask any Norwegian about the most beautiful place in their country on mainland, and without hesitation, they’ll say it’s the Lofoten Islands.
This incredible archipelago, stretching for 112 km, is located in the north-western part of Norway, in the Norwegian Sea. It’s a place where narrow fjords cut between sharp, jagged mountain ranges, offering spectacular views. Rocks formed 3 billion years ago dazzle with their majesty. Perched above the water are rorbuer – wooden, colourful cabins built on rocks or poles driven into the bottom of bays. Their vibrant hues beautifully contrast with the serene grey, green, and white background. However, they bear no resemblance to the ancient Viking settlements that once occupied this area.
The Lofoten is also a land of flavours and aromas. Fish, especially cod, dominates here. Whether dried or fresh – especially self-caught – it’s worth a try. Nowhere else will it taste as delicious.

Our trip combines sailing and trekking. Thanks to the yacht, we can reach all places, including those inaccessible from the land side. We can admire them from a beautiful sea perspective, try fishing, observe eagles and other wildlife. But when we reach the port, it’s time to explore on land and embark on treks to the most fascinating places. And there’s plenty to see in the Lofoten.

From September to March, the skies are often painted with beautiful Northern Lights. The Lofoten Islands are famous for this, which only emphasizes the magic of this archipelago.

Additionally, as part of this trip, we will have the opportunity to see the fascinating landscape of Senja Island, the sunny island of Sommarøy – known as the Norwegian Maldives, and we will conclude the journey in the Paris of the North, as Tromsø is often called.

Trip Program

Day 1: Tromsø

Tromsø

Embarkation begins at 4:00 PM, followed by dinner. We will then have our first safety training session to prepare for departure.

We will explore the “Paris of the North,” as Tromsø is often called. It is the largest city in the Arctic region of Scandinavia, located about 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, at the same latitude as northern Alaska. Tromsø occupies most of the island of Tromsøya and part of the neighboring island of Kvaløya.

This is where explorers Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen set off on their expeditions. Known as the Gateway to the Arctic, the City of the Arctic Ocean, and the “Paris of the North,” Tromsø attracts tourists and is an excellent place to observe the Northern Lights.

Day 2-4: Tromsø - Sommarøy (option) - Trollfjorden

Tromsø - Sommarøy (option) - Trollfjorden

After breakfast, we begin our voyage. We set sail from the marina, passing the Arctic Cathedral on our port side, along with the nearby Fløya mountain, from which there is a spectacular view of Tromsø. We then sail along the beautiful island of Kvaløya. If conditions allow, we will head to the Lofoten Islands via the outer route, and if not, we will sail through the inner fjords.

OPTION: We stop at Sommarøy, one of our favorite places in Norway. Sommarøy is a sunny island of happy people who don’t keep track of time. This place, with its white sandy beaches, blue waters, and rocky coastline, is often called the “Norwegian Maldives.” Here, we rest, but actively, as there’s plenty to explore. Those interested can hike up the nearby Hillesøya mountain, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding islands, or visit the charming Arctic Hotel for a relaxing sauna experience.

The outer route involves sailing into the Norwegian Sea and circumnavigating the picturesque island of Senja from the north, passing through an area where whales are sometimes spotted, as this is near the famous Norwegian Andenes, from where day trips in search of these mammals are organized. We will then head towards Tollfjorden, passing through fjords, between rocks, under bridges, and through beautiful straits.

The outer route described above requires good weather conditions. Entering the small port of Sommarøy through the skerries also demands favorable weather, as it is challenging due to narrow passages, the number of surrounding rocks, and minimal depths. If the conditions are not suitable, the route through the inner fjords, which are also scenic, will be chosen.

If the weather does not allow us to follow the outer route, we will try to reach the Lofoten Islands through the inner fjords.

Day 5-7: Trollfjorden - Svolvær - Henningsvær - Nusfjord - Reine (Hamnøy)

Trollfjorden - Svolvær - Henningsvær - Nusfjord - Reine (Hamnøy)

We arrive at Trollfjorden, one of the most important highlights of our itinerary. Along the way, we try to catch some fish and watch for eagles, which nest in the area.

Trollfjorden is a breathtaking, deep fjord surrounded by towering, often snow-capped mountains, with a narrow rocky entrance formed by steep mountains several hundred meters high, from which waterfalls cascade. It’s something you really have to see, to sail through this incredible gateway. And inside, you reach a true “end of the world.” The rounded fjord has a small pier at the end where we plan to stop. Here, you can at least for a while forget about everything, disconnect from civilization (especially since there’s no cell service here), and truly relax.

We stay overnight, and the next day we go trekking. Once again, how far we can go depends on the weather conditions. Our maximum plan is to reach Trollfjordhytta and the picturesque mountain lake situated at an altitude of 400 meters. The trek is demanding, but with each meter we ascend, the magnificent panorama of the fjord will open up before us, even if we don’t complete the entire route.

We continue onward to the southern part of the Lofoten Islands, arriving in Svolvær, a small town in the Nordland region, often referred to as the “capital of the Lofoten.” It is beautifully located on the island of Austvågøya – with Vestfjorden and the sea to the south and high mountains to the north, including the distinctive peak of Svolværgeita with its two “goat” horns.

Here, we have two trekking options. The first, which requires good weather, is a climb to the distinctive 150-meter granite peak of Svolværgeita, topped with two “goat” horns, separated by 1.5 meters. Some people make it a point of honor to jump from one horn to the other, later recounting that during the jump, they could see the churchyard cemetery below. The second option, easier but no less scenic, is a route around the Nedre-Svolværvatnet lake.

Next, we head to Henningsvær, located just over 20 nautical miles away – a picturesque town spread across islands, crisscrossed by canals, reminiscent of Venice. We sail into a narrow channel surrounded by traditional Norwegian buildings. Exploring Henningsvær takes a few hours; we stroll through the town and visit the famous football field located at the end of the island, surrounded by the sea. We stay here overnight.

The next day, we continue westward and sail to Nusfjord, one of the smallest and most charming fishing villages, entirely under UNESCO protection due to its location and traditional architecture. The small, shallow, and narrow fjord, where there is a wooden waterfront, is the only place to dock in Nusfjord. We can stop here only if the weather conditions are favorable. We usually stay for just a few hours, as the tides make this an inconvenient place for a longer stop. However, that’s enough time for us to explore this small settlement and take beautiful photos at several scenic spots.

After another 10 nautical miles, we reach one of the most beautiful places in the Lofoten Islands: Reine.

Day 8-9: Reine - Å - Bodø

Reine - Å - Bodø

We spend the day in Reine. This small fishing village is considered a symbol of the Lofoten Islands, and the views here appear on postcards and in thousands of photos taken by tourists visiting the Lofoten Islands.

We set out for a trek in the area. Depending on the conditions and the weather, we can climb Reinebringen, from where the most beautiful panorama of the Lofoten Islands unfolds, or embark on a 3-4 hour trek through fantastic photographic spots, including the nearby village of Hamnøy. If we feel like it, we can visit one of the restaurants to try Norwegian specialties. At night, there’s another chance to see the Northern Lights.

If we have enough time, we will sail to the village of Sørvågen. It is a small, charming fishing port where we try to find a spot to dock. We are welcomed by the red rorbuer cabins.

We set out on a hike along the picturesque coastline to the village of Å, located 2 km away, which has the shortest name in the world. It is one of the most famous places in the Lofoten Islands and a must-see stop on the route. We are greeted by a sign with the name of the village, where it’s essential to take a photo. Then we enter the typical architecture of a Lofoten fishing village, where once again red cabins stand on stilts above the sea, and cod is drying on wooden poles nearby. In the village, there is a Stockfish Museum.

From here, we will head south on a journey of about 50 nautical miles across Vestfjord to the city of Bodø, where we will conclude our cruise.

Day 10: Bodø

Bodø

We say goodbye to beautiful Norway, a powerhouse of nature, landscapes, and phenomena. Check-out is at 10 AM.

The above program is a framework. Its implementation depends on the weather. The order of its stages may change and be adjusted to the prevailing conditions, and some points in the program may not be realized. It may turn out that we spend more time in Bodø, undertaking treks in the area. The route from Tromsø to the Lofoten Islands also has two options: through the outer or inner fjords. Participants in the expedition must take this into account.

After all, this is the Arctic. However, based on our experience, we can assure you that we will spend our time very actively and will do our utmost to ensure that the participants of the expedition see as many attractions as possible.
