Gateway to the Fairytale Island
BASIC INFORMATION
Finnsnes is a small town located in Troms County, within the municipality of Lenvik. Beautifully situated along the Gisundet Strait, it lies beside the impressive Gisund Bridge, which connects the mainland to the island of Senja – often referred to as the “Fairytale Island.”
Finnsnes is located in a region that has undergone remarkable development over the past century. Originally a small farming community, the growth of trade and services led to Finnsnes being granted town status in 2000. Even today, agriculture and fishing remain important parts of the local economy.
Although the town covers an area of only 3.5 km², it serves as the cultural centre of the region. Finnsnes has schools, a library, a sports hall, and a modern cultural centre that hosts concerts, theatre performances, and community events. Every summer, the town comes alive during the week-long “Finnsnes i Fest” festival.
One of the town’s unique features is its park with a natural lake, a rarity among Norwegian towns of this size. Overlooking the harbour stands the statue of the Viking Ottar fra Hålogaland, one of northern Norway’s most famous historical figures, who has become the symbol of Finnsnes.
GATEWAY TO THE FAIRYTALE ISLAND
Finnsnes is best known as the gateway to Senja, connected by the architecturally impressive Gisund Bridge.
Senja is Norway’s second-largest island and one of the country’s most spectacular travel destinations. Its landscapes are incredibly diverse. Along the northern coastline, the Norwegian Sea crashes onto beautiful sandy beaches, while dramatic mountain peaks rise directly from the fjords, offering breathtaking panoramic views. Scattered throughout the island are colourful fishing villages that perfectly capture the charm of Arctic Norway.
During some of our expeditions that combine Lofoten and Tromsø, we stop in Finnsnes before continuing our journey, making it an ideal gateway to one of Norway’s most beautiful islands.
