BASIC INFORMATION
It is the largest city of the polar region in all of Scandinavia, situated about 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, sharing the same latitude as northern Alaska. It occupies most of Tromsøya island and part of the adjacent Kvaløya island.
Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen set off on expeditions from here. Referred to as the “Gateway to the Arctic,” the “City of the Arctic Ocean,” and the “Paris of the North,” it attracts tourists as an excellent location for observing the Northern Lights.

GATEWAY TO ARCTIC ADVENTURE
Tromsø, founded in the 13th century, was originally a village of about 80 inhabitants. The town earned the name ‘Paris of the North’ in the 18th century, when traders brought fashionable clothes from the capital of France, selling them to the wives of rich local merchants.
Tromsø is an ideal place to observe the Northern Lights. Visitors can also partake in exciting outdoor activities and savor local cuisine served in the city’s restaurants.
During spring and summer, from May 20 to July 20, the sun does not set here, providing excellent conditions to make the most of additional hours of light and available activities. Tromsø has a mild climate for a place this far north. This is due to Tromsø’s coastal location and the influence of the warm Gulf Stream.
The city is famous for its lively nightlife and numerous restaurants where you can enjoy local dishes made with Arctic ingredients.
For us, Tromsø is the base for our northern expeditions. This is where we start our “Auroras and Whales” trips, from here we set off for Svalbard in April and return at the end of September. The city is well connected by air.
