SOMMARØY

Północne Malediwy

BASIC INFORMATION
Sommarøy is a charming fishing village located on the western coast of Norway, approximately 36 kilometers west of Tromsø. Its popularity is attributed to picturesque landscapes, white sandy beaches, and a skerry coastline with numerous islands and coves. Sommarøy encompasses the Sommarøya island, part of the neighboring Hillesøya island, and many smaller surrounding islets. It is a typical fishing village with a significant fishing fleet, fish processing facilities, serving as an important tourist destination. In the vicinity, there is also an Arctic hotel.
It is one of Norway’s sunniest islands, often chosen by Norwegians for their holidays. In winter, Arctic surfers frequent the area.

WHERE BEAUTY CONQUERS TIME
An interesting fact is that on Sommarøy, the sun doesn’t set from May 18 to July 26, providing 69 days of continuous daylight. Subsequently, long polar nights occur from November to January when the sun doesn’t rise at all due to the town’s location north of the Arctic Circle. However, the sky is often adorned with the Northern Lights.
In June 2019, a marketing campaign claimed that Sommarøy’s residents wanted to declare the island the world’s first time-free zone. They petitioned the Norwegian government to abolish civil time on the island. All this according to the principle: the happy do not count time. To this day, tourists attach watches to a local bridge in solidarity with the promoted idea.
Sommarøy is a must-visit destination during our car tours in the Tromsø region.
