SARSTANGEN

Arctic Walrus Beach

BASIC INFORMATION
Sarstangen is a sandy headland extending over 3 kilometres into the sea, which in recent years has become a favourite spot for walruses. Crossing the Forlandsundet strait, a sandbank reaches this sandy promontory, creating perfect living conditions for walruses. They have ample space for hunting and resting on the beach.
We visit Sarstangen during our expeditions to the north of Spitsbergen. With southern winds, we anchor at a short distance north of the promontory and await curious walruses, which often approach the yacht for a visit. If we have enough time, we make a landing on the beach and can closely observe the walruses’ land habits and take fantastic photos with mountains and glaciers in the background.
