KVALØYA

Wyspa z wymarzonymi trasami trekkingowymi

BASIC INFORMATION
Kvaløya is the fifth-largest island in Norway, situated in the municipality of Tromsø. It lies between the neighboring Tromsøya and Sommarøy, connected by long bridges.
In the northern part, the island is characterized by stunning mountain landscapes intersected by fjords. The Kattfjordeidet massif has even earned the name of the “Scandinavian Chamonix” due to its impressive mountains and the spectacular views they offer. It’s worth exploring the village of Ersfjordbotn, nestled in a beautiful fjord at the foot of this massif.
In the southern part of the island, several resorts and the famous fishing spot in Hella can be found. Throughout the year, reindeer, otters, eagles, and various bird species can be encountered in the area. Whales are often spotted along the coasts. Not without a reason, “kvaløya” means “a whale island.”

MOUNTAINS, FJORDS, NORTHERN LIGHTS
Thanks to its topography and diversity, Kvaløya is one of the most beautiful Norwegian islands. It offers numerous picturesque trekking trails, places worth seeing, beaches, coves, and viewpoints. It’s a destination where a photographer could spend many days capturing its beauty.
As the island is somewhat distant from Tromsø, it also provides favourable conditions for witnessing the incredible phenomenon – the Northern Lights. The aurora is the result of the collision between the solar wind and the Earth’s atmosphere, occurring only in the polar regions, about 100 km above the Earth. It displays a variety of colours as it shines in the hue of the dominant gas in the upper atmosphere – green when colliding with oxygen particles and red when interacting with nitrogen particles.
During our car tours organized as part of “Auroras and Whales” trips, we often visit the most beautiful spots, including the afore-mentioned Ersfjordbotn with the “Scandinavian Chamonix,” Kattfjordeidet, the atmospheric Grøtfjorden, and reach Brosmetinden. Here, equipped with snowshoes, we embark on a 2-3 hour trekking adventure, one of the most spectacular in the area.
