ISFJORDEN

The Central Fjord of Spitsbergen

PBASIC INFORMATION
Isfjorden is the main fjord located in the central part of Spitsbergen. With a length of 107 km, it is the second longest fjord on Svalbard, but considering its area and numerous side fjords, it is regarded as the largest one. Additionally, it encompasses a wide range of Arctic landscapes, geology, biology, and history of Spitsbergen, as well as almost all representatives of the local flora and fauna. Several active human settlements are situated along its shores, with the largest ones being Longyearbyen (the administrative capital of the archipelago) and Barentsburg (a Russian coal mine).
The fjord lies above 78° north latitude, meaning it is nearly 1300 km above the Arctic Circle. In this place, one can feel like one is at the top of the world, in the far North.
The fjord is the main attraction of Svalbard.

Isfjorden is a place where whales come in. Here, we have observed blue whales, fin whales, belugas, and humpbacks. Entire colonies of birds soar above the water, including charming puffins. On the shores, one can encounter large herds of reindeer, roaming polar foxes, and polar bears wandering in search of food.
All of our trips on Svalbard start and end in Isfjorden. It is connected to the small Adventfjorden, at the end of which lies our base: the town of Longyearbyen. Isfjorden leads us to its numerous hidden attractions nestled within its branching fjords.
