Description
Ilulissat. Beautiful Disko Bay. Ilulissat Ice Fjord. The largest calving glaciers. Encounters with whales. Fantastic icebergs. Treks. Kayaking among the ice. Inuit settlements.
The area around Ilulissat and Disko Bay is undoubtedly the most beautiful part of Western Greenland. Wild mountain landscapes are filled with glaciers and enormous icebergs. Whales love this place too, giving us a great chance for close encounters with humpbacks.
During our expedition, we aim to explore the Ilulissat Icefjord (Sermeq Kujalleq), which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its spectacular nature. At its beginning there is Sermeq Kujalleq (Jakobshavn Isbræ), the fastest moving glacier in the world, advancing up to 19 meters per day. This rapid movement causes large icebergs, sometimes as large as a kilometer, to break off. Some icebergs rise 150 meters above the water, offering unique views. As they break apart, they form beautifully shaped ice formations.
For several days, we will travel aboard a yacht across Disko Bay. Depending on the weather and ice conditions, we will choose from the following places:
– Qeqertarsuaq – a small settlement on Disko Island, one of the oldest human settlements in Greenland, with an interesting history, culture, and monuments worth visiting.
– Oqaatsut – a small, charming fishing village where you can experience the authentic life of Greenlandic fishermen. The settlement offers the chance to taste local dishes and learn about the local culture.
– Saqqaq – located northwest of Ilulissat, at the entrance to Sullorsuaq Strait, a village famous for its 4,000-year-old Inuit settlement remains.
– Eqi Glacier – one of the most beautiful glaciers in Greenland. You can reach it by yacht and admire the spectacular glacier front up close, witnessing the calving process as ice chunks break off and fall into the water.
While sailing the yacht across Disko Bay, we will explore numerous fjords that offer incredible landscapes and opportunities to observe wildlife, including seals, seabirds, and whales.
Our journey will be in a small, intimate group on a comfortable and safe yacht. With experienced guides who will do everything to ensure you return enchanted by your encounter with the Arctic Land.
